The Albuquerque Daylily Society Fall Plant Sale is 9-4 on Friday and Saturday September 27 and 28 at the Albuquerque Garden Center located at 10120 Lomas Blvd. NE. September is the month to dig up, divide, and replant daylilies that have grown into large clumps. For their fall sale, Daylily Society members dig all the plants from their personal gardens, and all plants are tried-and-true and acclimatized to Albuquerque. Also, daylily show judges are required to grow new cultivars each year, so some of the best daylily gardeners in the country will be digging up old favorites and their biggest and best plants for this sale to make room for new introductions.
Daylilies are hardy perennials that grow well in our high desert gardens. Each daylily flower blooms for just one day which is where daylilies get their name, but many cultivars have dozens of blooms on multiple stocks and a collection of daylilies can offer continuous blooms all summer. The flowers can be ruffled, doubles, miniatures, spiders or UFOs (exuberant large blooms) in purple, red, salmon, pink, yellow, orange, cranberry, cream, green and combinations of colors. Tall, short, early, mid-season, and late bloomers will be identified to aid in planning a garden that blooms from early June through August. Daylilies are easy and ready to plant right now. Just put them in the ground with a little compost, water them throughout the season, and next summer green shoots followed by spectacular blooms will be the reward. Daylily Society members will be on hand to answer planting questions.
The sale plants are unusual hybrid daylillies not available at local nurseries. There may only be a few of each variety, so come early for the best selection. The ABQ Daylily Society Plant Sales always sell out.
