Southern Sandoval County Arroyo and Flood Control Authority Tour – Call for 20 Volunteers

SEMG members have the opportunity to tour the SSCAFCA (Southern Sandoval County Arroyo and Flood Control Authority) grounds and two of their site projects on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 from 9:00 am-12 noon.

Headquarters: Completed in 2010, SSCAFCA headquarters was designed and constructed as an example of Arid Low Impact Development techniques for harvesting stormwater from a site and using it to irrigate the native landscaping.

Lower Montoyas Water Quality Facility: This facility, constructed on the main stem of an active arroyo, integrates low impact development techniques into more traditional civil engineering functions. A variety of different techniques were used and evaluated for durability in the relatively extreme environment of main arroyo flows.

Harvey Jones Channel Outlet: At the very bottom of the Montoyas Arroyo system, SSCAFCA, the City of Rio Rancho, MRGCD, the Village of Corrales and The Nature Conservancy combined efforts and resources to construct a wetlands where the Montoyas Arroyo intersects with the Rio Grande.  By redirecting reclaimed water effluent and directing stormwater we have been able to create a wetlands habitat that will benefit wildlife and water quality.

We have only 20 slots for this event so sign up on the volunteer sign-up page if you’d like to attend: http://Southern Sandoval County Arroyo and Flood Control Authority Tour | Sandoval Extension Master Gardeners (sandovalmastergardeners.org)
