Who's invited: We are prioritizing volunteers and gardening group members for this event. Please share this event with your volunteer groups. And check with me if you know of other tree-loving gardener types who would like to register. We're happy to include others as space allows!
University of Arizona Professor and Extension Specialist Dr. Ursula Schuch will give two presentations with discussions:
- "Tree Irrigation" - The goal of tree irrigation is to maintain optimum health and functionality of urban landscapes. How much, how often, and how long should trees be watered? The amount, frequency, and duration of irrigation depends on tree genetics, soil characteristics, and the location where a tree is planted. Site-specific challenges, general considerations, and research results will be discussed to assist landscape managers in choosing the appropriate irrigation strategies for their sites.
- "Understanding and Managing Abiotic and Biotic Threats to Desert Adapted Trees" - This presentation will cover how desert-adapted trees respond to heat and drought stress, their coping mechanisms, consequences of prolonged heat and drought, and potential subsequent risks of insects or disease intrusion. Biotic threats, including witches broom and mistletoe, will be discussed, including how they colonize and affect trees. Strategies for managing and mitigating these abiotic stress conditions and biotic impacts to preserve tree health will be addressed. We will learn about preventative and acute interventions to maintain optimum tree and urban forest health for desert-adapted trees.
